California Residents, Receive Free Therapy in a Clinical Trial

Clinical Trial of Somatic Quieting

Somatic quieting is an innate bodily process that helps to calm the physical sensations that arise from intense or negative emotions.

About the research

The purpose of this study is to provide scientific evidence to show the effectiveness of a psychological intervention on anxiety and depression. The intervention enables somatic quieting, a natural process of the nervous system that can calm feelings. Since the 1990s teams of healing arts and medical professionals, including doctors, physical therapists, psychotherapists, and alternative healing professionals, have been exploring and testing methods to enable somatic quieting for a wide range of emotional difficulties.

The results of this study may have the potential to help many people who are unable to afford long-term mental healthcare costs, by reducing the number of appointments needed to reach mental health goals.

Participation

We are seeking participants living in California who have anxiety and/or depression that impacts day-to-day functioning. Symptoms may include:

  • Sleep difficulties
  • Excessive sleep
  • Change in appetite
  • Low or no motivation
  • Tearfulness or crying spells
  • Fear
  • Hopelessness
  • Difficulty with concentration
  • Jitters or shakiness
  • Restlessness or nervousness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Panic

Each participant who is accepted into the study will attend a consultation call and at least eight (8) sessions. There will be two groups, a control group receiving standard psychotherapy and a study group which will receive psychotherapy with attention on somatic quieting. Each participant will be randomly placed in one of the two groups. During the consultation call, the intake coordinator will review with you the forms that you will need to complete. We ask that these forms be completed before the first session.

Those who are members of the control group will have the option to try the somatic quieting treatment. Those who choose to try the treatment will receive a ninth session.

There is no payment for participation. This study is not funded by any corporation or institution. This study is the project of independent researchers and is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.
